Deadly wreck closes I-285 in SW Atl. for 6+ hours

One person is dead and three others are hospitalized following a three vehicle crash on I-285 in southwest Atlanta.

The accident happened around 9 p.m. Sunday in the southbound lanes of the interstate.  Atlanta Police Officer John Chafee told WSB's Mark Alewine a car ran off the road, hit a guardrail just south of Campbellton Road and bounced back into the path of a pickup.

Chafee said the collision caused the car to burst into flames, killing the driver and critically injuring the passenger.

The driver of the pickup is hospitalized, as is the driver of a tractor trailer who wrecked trying to avoid the first accident.

The cause of the crash, which shut down a portion of the perimeter highway for more than six and a half hours, is under investigation.
