It's life without parole for the man convicted of killing two Dekalb County Police officers. WSB's Jon Lewis was in the courtroom on Friday when William Woodard learned his fate.
Woodard sat quietly while the verdict was being read, but his family members did not. They shook their heads angry at the sentence and angry at the verdict in the case, saying that he is innocent of the crime.
It took the jury about seven hours before reaching the verdict. Woodard was given life without parole, but he could have been sentenced to death.
He was convicted last week of murdering Police Officers Erik Barker and Ricky Bryant, back in January 2008. Woodard claimed that he fatally shot two police officers in self-defense.
The judge gave Woodard two consecutive life sentences.
Woodard said nothing to the Judge after the jury read their verdict, "life without parole." He was led out by a heavy security team. Sixteen uniform Deputies were in the Courtroom as Woodard's verdict and sentencing were being read.
