Cobb County deputy behind bars

A disgraced Cobb County deputy will spend the next two decades behind bars.

Alvin Sutherland, 52, admitted in court Monday that he had sex with five female inmates of the Cobb County Jail – sex that, in some cases, he forced upon them.

“It was a sad day for law enforcement. I’m sorry it happened,” said Cobb County District Attorney Vic Reynolds.

Sutherland is the second Cobb County deputy to be imprisoned for having sex with female inmates in less than two months. Kristopher Travitz, a 14-year veteran of the Sheriff’s Office, will spend the next five years in prison for having sex with two female inmates.

Judge Mary Staley called Sutherland’s acts “deplorable and despicable,” sentencing the former deputy to 40-years with 20 to serve.
