Cleanup underway after CSX train derailment in Lilburn

Gwinnett fire crews remain on scene Sunday afternoon after an overnight train derailment in Lilburn.

Gwinnett Fire says it received a 911 call before 2 a.m. of the derailment in the area of Main Street and Camp Creek Road. Early reports described the train on its side and taking on water following heavy rains from storms that were moving through. 38 rail cars derailed with several on fire. Two CSX employees were treated with minor injuries.

Because of hazardous materials involved, authorities evacuated residents close to the accident scene. The evacuation order was lifted later Sunday morning.

Multiple agencies responded to help with the incident, including Lilburn Police, Gwinnett County Police and the Sheriff’s Office, and the county’s Water Resources Dept. DeKalb Fire Rescue also offered their help.

The EPA and EPD is on scene as well.
