Lavonia, cities in Gwinnett Co make plans for CARES dollars

The Clarke County School Board met virtually Thursday night, the same way Clarke County grade schools have been learning since the September 8 start of a new school year in Athens. That could change one month from today: the Clarke County School District is looking at a tentative November 9 date for having students return to classrooms.

The City Council in Lavonia signs off on plans to use more than $115,000 in federal funding, coronavirus relief money approved by Congress earlier this year. Lavonia has received the first phase of its CARES Act distribution.

Gwinnett County gets another $20 million in congressional funding to help with relief and recovery from the coronavirus pandemic. The money will be distributed among cities in Gwinnett County.

The Georgia Department of Public Health says the state added another three dozen deaths from coronavirus over the past 24 hours for a seven-month total of just under 7,300. The state’s positive test percentage has dipped below ten percent, checking in today at 9.9 percent.

The COVID 19 pandemic is taking a huge toll on the economy in Atlanta. The Atlanta Convention and Visitors Bureau pegs losses at $10 billion and counting and says a full recovery might be several years away.
