Brown water, air conditioning issues force Dunwoody High School to switch to virtual learning

DEKALB COUNTY, GA — Students and teachers at Dunwoody High School will finish the week learning remotely after brown water was discovered coming from faucets in parts of the building.

According to DeKalb County Schools spokesperson Jennifer Carraciolo, the water issues began Monday when some faucets started producing cloudy or discolored water.

“It wasn’t the entire building that was without water, or experiencing cloudy or dark water, it was an isolated area; but it is a large high school,” Carraciolo said.

School officials initially believed the problem was caused by an external water main break, but later determined the issue was inside the school.

Crews are working to repair a faulty water valve that also affected the building’s air conditioning system.

Carraciolo said the district provided bottled water and additional sanitation resources while students and staff remained in the building.

“They brought in bottled water to cook, bottled water for people to drink, and then restrooms obviously you couldn’t use that water to flush, but they were bringing in hand washing stations too as well,” Carraciolo said.

The district ultimately decided to move students to virtual, asynchronous learning Thursday and Friday to allow crews to complete repairs.

“To be able to fix this, instead of having hundreds of people in the building, we’re going to switch to being virtual/asynchronous for the next two days,” Carraciolo said.

School officials say weekend extracurricular activities will not be affected, and students are expected to return to in-person classes Monday.
