ATLANTA — Alice, the Georgia Aquarium’s beloved female whale shark, has passed away.
Aquarium officials say they have recently noticed that Alice’s behavior and bloodwork has been changing recently.

They say her condition severely worsened yesterday and, despite their teams’ best efforts, did not improve. They determined the only humane thing to do would be to euthanize Alice.
Alice came to the aquarium in 2006, less than a year after the Georgia Aquarium opened in 2005, from Taiwan, where spokespeople say she was “destined for the seafood market.”

Alice’s time with researchers at the aquarium provided invaluable insight into the whale shark species.
“It was a tremendous honor to be the steward of Alice’s care and for that we will be forever grateful to her,” a Facebook post announcing her death read.
