Atlanta United got its new season going with a 3-1 win over Sporting Kansas City Sunday afternoon. It came in front of a home crowd of more than 65,000 fans inside Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
Luiz Araujo got the scoring going with a goal in the first half’s 20th minute. Atlanta made it 2-0 in first half stoppage time off a goal from Dom Dwyer making his ATL UTD debut.
Kansas City gave itself life in the game’s 85th minute with a goal to cut the deficit to 2-1. But Atlanta got that right back four minutes later as 17-year-old Caleb Wiley scored in his debut.
Sunday’s game marked the first home opener in club history at Mercedes-Benz Stadium for ATL UTD.
