Atlanta police officer shot while responding to mental health call

ATLANTA — An Atlanta police officer was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital after being shot while responding to a mental health call Monday morning.

Police were called to a home in the 1400 block of Clark Howard Lane SW in the Oakland City neighborhood around 8:40 a.m. Monday.

Atlanta Police Chief Darin Schierbaum said officers were called to the home for a mental health call and that police have responded to the same location multiple times.

Police say officers were shot at after arriving at the home. Officer Devante Matthews, 30, was struck in the arm.

Matthews joined the Atlanta Police Department in September 2019. He is expected to be OK.

Police identified the suspect as 24-year-old Michael Gates. Gates was taken into custody following the shooting.

No one else was reported injured.
