Amazon warns viewers about 'racist' Tom and Jerry cartoons

Fans of the classic Tom and Jerry cartoons can relive their childhood now that Amazon Prime Instant Video has added some episodes to their streaming service...but the 'toons are coming with a disclaimer.

According to the

Tom and Jerry: The Complete Second Volume is accompanied by the caution: 'Tom and Jerry shorts may depict some ethnic and racial prejudices that were once commonplace in American society. Such depictions were wrong then and are wrong today.'

The warning follows concerns that the black maid in early episodes of the cartoon was an example of prejudices during that 1940's era.

Fans took to social media, calling the assumption that the cartoons were racist "PC madness."

The original shorts, first produced by the MGM film studio in 1940, also face controversy on other themes like the glamorization of smoking and cannibalism.
