AAA urges helmet use as e-bike injuries increase among children

ATLANTA — AAA is urging families to prioritize helmet safety as injuries involving electric bikes increase among children.

A recent survey in Georgia found more than half of adults have seen children riding e-bikes or electric scooters without helmets. The survey also found 43% of adults believe not enough riders are wearing helmets.

Only about one-third of injured riders report wearing a helmet.

The American College of Surgeons reports head injuries are the most common injuries associated with e-bike crashes. Head and neck injuries are also among the most common injuries involving the devices.

AAA recommends riders wear a properly fitted helmet that meets national safety standards and is appropriate for the speed and type of device they are riding.

Georgia requires riders younger than 16 to wear a helmet while riding. The state does not have a minimum age requirement to ride an e-bike or electric scooter.
