DEKALB COUNTY, GA — Eight DeKalb County Police Department employees have been suspended following an investigation into misuse of the Flock Safety automatic license plate reader system.
DeKalb County police say the violations were discovered during a routine audit of employees’ use of the system.
The department did not specify how the employees misused the technology. None of the employees have been fired, and no criminal charges have been filed.
DeKalb County police say routine audits allow the department to identify potential misuse and take action when violations occur.
The investigation comes amid concerns in Atlanta and across the country about privacy, misuse and mistakes involving automatic license plate reader systems.
Several groups, including human rights activists, have called for Flock systems to be removed over privacy concerns.
The national organization DeFlock is organizing a week of action against automatic license plate readers beginning Aug. 16.
