ROCKDALE COUNTY, GA — Twenty-two students and staff members were injured after a school bus carrying the Salem High School football team overturned in Rockdale County late Friday night.
The crash happened around 10:48 p.m. near Interstate 20 and Highway 138 as the team was returning home from a game in Norcross.
According to the Georgia State Patrol, the 74-year-old bus driver lost control while exiting I-20, causing the bus to cross all lanes of Highway 138.
Troopers say the bus struck a black Kia Soul after entering the northbound lanes. Both drivers were taken to the hospital.
Rockdale County Schools confirmed the bus was carrying 17 football players, seven trainers, two coaches and the driver.
Several students were hospitalized, including one who was transported by medical helicopter. Some students were taken to hospitals by ambulance, while others were transported by their parents.
Georgia State Patrol officials are working with school administrators and emergency medical personnel to determine the extent of the injuries and identify which hospitals received the students.
No fatalities were reported.
The circumstances surrounding the crash remain under investigation.
