ATLANTA — Two people are in custody and Atlanta police are searching for a third suspect after gunfire erupted at Piedmont Park Wednesday afternoon.
Police believe an argument involving three people led to shots being fired near a pavilion inside the park. No one was shot or injured.
Atlanta Police Chief Darin Schierbaum said officers reached the park within two minutes of receiving the first calls about shots fired.
“We treated this as an active shooter situation, and you saw a robust response by this department for an active shooter in our city,” Schierbaum said.
Officers took a 29-year-old and a 21-year-old into custody. Schierbaum said one of the first officers to respond encountered one of the suspects attempting to change clothes.
Police identified one of the suspects as Marquise Brown. He is charged with possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony and possession with intent to distribute controlled substances. Brown also had outstanding warrants in another jurisdiction.
Investigators are still working to determine whether any of the shots were fired into the air or directed at other people in the park.
Officers recovered a rifle and a pistol and searched the area for any additional weapons.
Police have not released the name of the third suspect, but Schierbaum said investigators have information about the person they are seeking.
“We have credible information on who they are, and our investigators are attempting to determine their whereabouts,” Schierbaum said.
Police said there is no current threat to the public.
A free Atlanta Symphony Orchestra concert at Piedmont Park went forward as scheduled Wednesday night, hours after the shooting.
The incident comes months after a shooting at the park in April that killed a 16-year-old girl and injured a 15-year-old.
