17 Iranians indicted after hackers allegedly targeted HBO, nearly 150 U.S. universities

The U.S. Department of Justice has indicted 17 Iranians in connection with a cyber campaign targeting U.S. universities and major companies, including HBO.

The Justice Department says the hackers stole intellectual property from HBO and attempted to extort the cable network for $6 million in Bitcoin.

The suspects were said to be employed by an Iran-based company and backed by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard.

More than half of the 17 suspects had already been charged with hacking into the systems of nearly 150 universities.
