Police investigate possible self-defense in fatal shooting of teen

ATLANTA — Atlanta police are investigating the fatal shooting of a 15-year-old boy as a possible case of self-defense.

Officers responded to a call of a person shot along Turman Avenue just after 5 p.m. Tuesday. When they arrived, police found a 15-year-old male dead from a gunshot wound. A gun was also found near the teen’s body, according to investigators.

Lieutenant Christopher Butler says almost simultaneously, officers received another call reporting a robbery. “Officers were dispatched over to that location and located a male who stated that he was a victim of a robbery and that he acted in self-defense,” Butler said.

Investigators say the man claims he fired the fatal shot during an attempted robbery. Police are questioning the man and collecting evidence to determine whether his account lines up with the circumstances before any possible charges are filed.

Atlanta police say they are also interviewing neighbors and searching for any video footage as the investigation continues.
