DEKALB COUNTY, GA — A DeKalb County family is searching for answers after an 11-year-old Peachtree Middle School student died after collapsing during basketball practice last week.
The girl was playing basketball during practice at the school when she suddenly collapsed. There has been no official word on her cause of death.
According to a GoFundMe page set up by the girl’s older sister, Mirabel Datsa, the family is still in shock and trying to process the loss.
Datsa says their mother cries for hours when her younger sister’s name is mentioned, while their 9-year-old brother is trying to understand what death means. She says their father is trying to remain calm on the outside while dealing with his grief.
Students and staff at Peachtree Middle School are also mourning the student’s death.
The DeKalb County School District Police Department is handling the investigation into what happened leading up to her death.
