1 dead, 1 injured after CSX train collides with vehicle

DEKALB COUNTY, GA — One person is dead after a train collided with a car.

The crash happened at the intersection of North Clarendon Avenue and East Ponce De Leon Avenue. Authorities say a southbound CSX freight train struck a car that was on the tracks, causing significant damage to the vehicle, particularly on the driver’s side.

DeKalb Police responded and found one person dead inside the car. DeKalb County’s Blaine Clark said the driver, a man, died at the scene and a woman passenger was taken to the hospital in critical condition. Officials said no one on board the train was injured

“Preliminary investigation suggests that the vehicle was stopped on the tracks and the driver was trying to help the passenger get out before the train arrived,” Clark said.

The intersection was shut down overnight while crews cleared debris and investigators worked the scene and tested signals and gates.

The intersection has since reopened to both rail and vehicle traffic Tuesday morning.
