There's only one more day of this legislative session, a state lawmaker is already introducing a bill for next year that would eliminate Georgia's income tax.
Rep. Tom Kirby (R-Loganville), surrounded by some of the state's newest elected House members, wants to move away from a state income tax in favor of a consumption-based tax.
“This is going to be a very important tool that’s going to help us to be competitive and stay competitive and bring Georgia to the lead in attracting all these new businesses,” he says.
Kirby says ten percent of the members in the House have signed onto the measure which he plans to work on between now and next year's session.
Kirby favors raising the state’s sales tax by as much as 4 percent while eliminating its Georgia’s 6 percent income tax. But says he’s looked a several models that would be revenue neutral. He did not release any of the figures at his news conference Wednesday.
