More than two dozen people demonstrated at East Point Police Headquarters Thursday, today, demanding better treatment of the LGBT community by officers on the street.
The protestors demanded to see the East Point Police Chief, angry over the way Juan Evans says he was treated during a traffic stop last week.
“I was called ‘it.’ I was called ‘thing.’ I was repeatedly threatened with having my genitals searched,” said Evans, who was born female before becoming a transgendered man.
Police initially refused to meet with representatives of the LGBT community, demanding instead that the protestors make an appointment. But instead, Mayor Jannquell Peters stepped in.
“She is setting up a meeting between us, the police chief and the city manager,” said Everett Thomas, one of the protest’s organizers. That meeting is tentatively scheduled for Friday afternoon.
