Larry Munson, Legendary Voice of the Dogs, dies

Larry Munson, the legendary voice of the University of Georgia Bulldogs, died Sunday evening at his Athens home.  He was 89.

Munson died of complications from pneumonia.  He had been hospitalized in September.

The legendary broadcaster called games for UGA for more than 40 years.  He gradually retired from broadcasting, first calling only the home games in 2007 before stepping away from the microphone.

In 2006, his radio family at News/Talk WSB honored Munson with a celebrity roast benefiting the Aflac Cancer Center at Children's Health Care of Atlanta.  Among the roasters were Neal Boortz, Clark Howard, Vince Dooley, Loran Smith, former UGA Head Coach Jim Donnan, former Governor Sonny Perdue, Wes Durham, and a host of former UGA players including Lindsay Scott.

The Georgia General Assembly honored Munson twice - in 1983 for his "great role in the Georgia championship football program," and in 1997 his 50th anniversary in broadcasting.

Funeral arrangements are pending.
