A jailer with the DeKalb County Sheriff's Office has been arrested for having sex with an inmate.
Sgt. Adrion Bell tells WSB Officer Zel Mitchell, 32, who has been with the department since March of 2011, was turned in by a second inmate.
"Allegedly it was in exchange for contraband such as food items to be brought from the detention officer to be brought into the jail to the inmate," said Bell.
Bell says inmates often sell those items to other inmates in exchange for other items from the cafeteria.
"The first contact we were told was sometime in November. They were discovered by a third inmate who reported to an officer sometime in February," said Bell.
Bell says Mitchell, who was fired, was charged with sexual assault on a person in custody, public indecency and violation of oath of office.
Bell says it is an intolerable act that will not be tolerated by the sheriff.
"I can't say that it never happens but it's not often. We have 518 employees in the jail, every now and then one does stop out of line," said Bell.
