Ga. House tables measure to change property tax bills

The State House votes to table a bill that would change how your property tax bills look.

Under the measure by Rep. Brett Harrell (R-Snellville), trash service, storm water, and other fees would no longer be included on those bills.

“It’s something I believe puts our homes at undo risk,” he says. “A clerical error, and in many cases, a tax commissioner will move and file a lien against your home.”

But he says it’s a good example of where a home can be put in jeopardy if people don’t pay for the service.

He tells WSB’s Sandra Parrish a move by the Gwinnett County Commission two years ago to begin charging residents for trash pickup on their property tax bills did not prompt his decision to introduce the legislation.

Harrell says it would be up to each county how to charge for those additional fees as long as they are not assessed with the taxes on a home.

Opponents complain it's not necessary and call it a solution looking for a problem.
