A man in his early 30s gave up peacefully late Sunday after an almost 11 hour standoff with police in Johns Creek.
The standoff happened outside a home on Tanners Spring Drive. The man barricaded himself inside his home with a gun around 2 p.m. Sunday. Police arrived after his mother called for help for her son who she says is mentally disturbed.
“According to her (he) suffered from emotional problems,” Johns Creek police spokeswoman Rosemary Taylor told WSB. “(She) called 911 and asked for police help in dealing with her son.”
Some neighbors were forced to evacuate their homes when police arrived. The suspect never fired at the SWAT team members, but apparently was threatening to shoot himself if officers approached him.
A witness said he gave up after police fired what he thought were gas canisters through the window. The suspect came out peacefully around 12:30 a.m. His name has not been released.
Investigators have not said exactly what caused the man to threaten to hurt himself. He has been charged with disorderly conduct and making terroristic threats to police officers.
