A Gwinnett County man is taking on his homeowner's association in an effort to improve the environment.
Marc Rhodes tells Channel 2 Action News he wants to add solar panels to the back of his home in the Duluth subdivision where he lives. He says he asked his HOA and they've said no. Rhodes says in an email, the board voted unanimously against the request, which he finds baffling.
"I'm a member of the board and I was not involved in any decision-making," said Rhodes.
Rhodes has now made a second request to his homeowner's association.
Dan Russell, is a business owner who installs solar panels for a living.
"Oh, no, no. He is not alone," said Russell.
That is why Russell is working with his state legislator to draft a new law.
"A solar rights bill which prohibits HOA's from denying anything that is energy-saving on a consumer's home," said Russell.
There are federal and state tax breaks for installing solar panels.
If the board approves the request, Rhodes could save up to $24,000 and see his monthly bill drop.
