Gwinnett commissioner wants sales tax boost to offset property taxes

If you live in Gwinnett County, would you be willing to pay more in sales tax in order to reduce your property taxes?

Commissioner Mike Beaudreau is proposing a local option sales tax referendum in November with the money to be used for county operations as well as a reduction in the amount of taxes property owners pay.

The commission learned this week that property values have declined another 8.6 percent this year. That means the county is out $28 million in revenue.  Commissioners were expecting the reduction, but were told by the county's chief appraiser that the trend would continue.

Beaudreau says the county should become less dependent on property tax revenue.

So far reviews among other commissioners are mixed.
