Misconceptions, fear, and wrong information are obstacles in the fight against Ebola in Nigeria. David Daigle is with a team from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that is in Nigeria right now. He says the biggest challenge so far has been tracking down anybody who may have had contact with a case.
"There is a lot of fear of course with Ebola," says Daigle.
He says the CDC team is being very careful to protect themselves.
He says another issue is convincing people to go to treatment centers once they have been identified as possibly having Ebola. He says the average Nigerian is very fearful of getting the disease.
"Certainly nobody is relaxed and we are all very cautious and we understand we are working with a very dangerous virus," says Daigle.
"We've had incidents where if they realize you are here for Ebola they may not want to give you a ride or you may have trouble."
He says he thinks once the Nigerians are educated on Ebola and how it is contracted those fears will subside.
The Ebola death toll now tops 1,000 and about twice as many people are sick. The World Health Organization calls this the deadliest Ebola outbreak in history.
