GBI investigates officer-involved shooting in DeKalb County

DEKALB COUNTY, GA — The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is investigating an officer-involved shooting that happened at an apartment complex in DeKalb County.

According to DeKalb County Police, officers responded to domestic dispute call at the East Ponce Village Apartments on Wood Bend Drive in Stone Mountain just before midnight Sunday.

During the response, an officer encountered a 22-year-old man who was armed with a firearm and apparently unrelated to the call.

When the officer noticed a gun on the ground near the man, he ordered him to move away. After the man refused to comply, the officer shot once, hitting the man.

Officers provided immediate first aid, and the man was transported to a local hospital. The identity of the man and current extent of his injury are unknown. No officers were injured in the incident.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has been requested to conduct an independent investigation.

DeKalb County Police Internal Affairs and the department’s Criminal Investigation Division are also reviewing the incident.
