An outreach counselor was shot in the head at close range as he played dodge ball with children in his charge.
The shooting happened around 2 p.m. Friday afternoon on the basketball court at Herz playground in Visitacion Valley.
According to Elizah Abdul-Salam, an acting board member of T.U.R.F, the non-profit that runs the summer program, there were about 45 kids nearby when it happened.
The Executive Director of Together United Recommitted Forever identified the counselor as Allen Calloway. Calloway had grown up in the neighborhood and according to colleagues and residents in the area, was turning his life around.
"He works with kids, he has kids, he was a nice guy," Shonnece Hill told KTVU. "Even though I didn't know him I heard all good things about him."
Hill was getting ready to board a bus with her family to another town so they could enjoy being outdoors and still be safe. She says that kind of security is not possible in Visitacion Valley.
"You should feel safe in a summer camp for kids," she said shaking her head.
San Francisco police do not have anyone in custody for the fatal shooting yet.
T.U.R.F is planning an emergency board meeting to discuss counseling for the children who witnessed the homicide and ways to prevent gun violence in the future.
