Travis Jacques has sold dozens of items on Craigslist over the years, but is lucky to be alive after his latest transaction.
The 23-year-old Conyers man went to the parking lot of Big Miller Grove Baptist Church in Lithonia last month to sell his cell phone, supposedly, to someone answering his ad.
But, instead, Jacques says he was greeted by two teenagers who pulled a gun and demanded the phone. Before Jacques could put it down, he shot in the hip.
Jacques says as one teen kept shooting, he was able to run to his car where his wife was waiting. As they drove off, he realized he was holding the bullet in his hand.
"I knew I got shot because I could hear it... and all the sudden the right side of my body gets pushed back," he tells WSB's Sandra Parrish.
"I had the phone in one hand and what I thought, at the time, was part of the bullet," he says. "I didn't think I had the whole bullet in my hand."
But he did. The hollow-point bullet, likely a .32 caliber, had flattened against his bone.
"The doctor told me if it was one centimeter higher, I would have died," says Jacques.
DeKalb County Police arrested 18-year-old Christopher Goode within hours. Three days later 17-year-old Travorris Theadcraft, the alleged shooter, was in custody.
Both are charged with criminal attempted armed robbery, while Theadcraft is also charged with aggravated assault.
Police say while Craigslist robberies are becoming more and more common, investigators don't believe the two suspects are connected with others.
As for Jacques, he feels blessed to be alive and does not plan to sell anything else on the internet website.
He recommends anyone who does to go to a police department to conduct their business.
