Cherokee police investigating death of infant

Cherokee County authorities are investigating the death of a three-week-old baby girl.  Lt. Jay Baker with the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office tells WSB it looks like the infant may have been accidentally smothered while sleeping with it.

When deputies arrived at the home on Alex Street Monday morning, they found the child dead.  It was taken to Northside Cherokee Hospital where she was later pronounced dead.

"It appears that the child was in the care of a relative of the parents who were also at the home.  But at the time of its death, according to statements, this infant was in the care of a relative and it's possible that that individual accidentally smothered the child,"" said Baker.

An autopsy has been performed but results from toxicology tests may take a while.

Baker says charges may or may not be filed in the case.

"If it turns out that it was an accident and there were no other factors that might have led to that it's unlikely there will be charges," said Baker.
