Buford middle school basketball player dies during game

A Buford middle school basketball player collapsed and died during the school's all-star game Saturday night.

7th grader Jeremy Nelson was playing in the Gwinnett Basketball League's All Star game for the Atlanta Celtics.

His father, Herb Nelson, tells Channel 2 Action News, "the game started at 8 p.m. and at 10:20 p.m. they pronounced my son dead."

The 12-year-olds parents and coach say they were outraged at how long it took for emergency crews to get to the boy.

Nelson's Coach Bryan Larrieu, says, "he's a high energy kid, no history of any health concerns and so for that to happen we thought he was just tired and so we subbed for him.  And, he sat there and a few seconds later kinda keeled over."

"There was probably 15 minutes before the local police force came. Another five to seven minutes or so before the firemen came and another eight minutes before the paramedics came," says Coach Larrieu.

The boy's father says "when it's your kid lying there, it's never quick enough."

The father says fortunately there was a doctor and a defibrillator nearby, but Jeremy later died at the Gwinnett Medical Center.

The family says it's unclear if the boy suffered from an undetected heart condition.

They are awaiting the results of an official medical examination.

School officials from Buford Middle School released a statement saying that 12-year-old "Jeremy was a very kind young man and an excellent student athlete."

All the games in Jeremy's age group have been canceled.
