Atlanta police investigate string of carjackings in Buckhead

Mark Hutto and his wife were enjoying a nice date night Wednesday in Buckhead.

They ran into what looked like a small complication when someone bumped into their car on the way home.

When Hutto got out to exchange insurance information with the other driver, the other end of a .9mm pistol was staring back at him.

"It was real simple: 'Give me everything you got or I'm going to kill you,'" Hutto said.

Hutto turned over his wallet and his keys and the suspects stole his car, leaving the couple on the side of the road.

Atlanta police say this is the third carjacking in the Buckhead area since Friday.

"We're lucky. I mean, it was very scary," Hutto told Channel 2 Action News.

He was stopped at the red light at the West Wesley and Howell Mill roads, a few feet away from Morris Brandon Elementary School.

Hutto says the suspects ran up behind him and bumped his car just enough to get him to come out. He says there were three men inside the other vehicle.

In an email, Atlanta Police Maj. Van Hobbs sent advice to drivers in similar situations:

  • Do not exit your vehicle but lock the doors, put on your flashers, and call 911 to report the accident.
  • Leave the vehicle in gear in case you need to escape the area.
  • Watch your mirrors to see what actions the individual(s) in the vehicle that struck you are taking.
  • If multiple subjects exit the vehicle and approach your vehicle rapidly or you feel threatened, leave the area and call 911.

"You don't think about those things until something like this happens to you. But you know, I know how I'll handle it next time," Hutto said.

Atlanta police are also looking into another carjacking earlier Wednesday morning on Ellsworth Industrial Boulevard.

Surveillance video from a nearby business shows the thief approach a man getting out of his car. That victim told Channel 2, the suspect point a gun at him and threatened to kill him.

Video shows the victim sprinting away as the man drives away in his car.
