Athens adds COVID death, latest UGA test numbers due today

The Georgia Department of Public Health says Athens has added another death from coronavirus, with a Clarke County total since March that now stands at 42. The number of cases added over the past two weeks has dropped below one thousand, checking in Tuesday at 859.

We expect to see later today the results of another week of coronavirus testing at the University of Georgia: UGA’s positive tests were down dramatically in the report that come out last Wednesday, dropping more than 70 percent from the week before. Faculty at the University of Georgia release a letter, calling on UGA administrators to do more to slow the spread of coronavirus in Athens.

The Northeast Georgia Health System says its hospitals in Gainesville and Braselton were, as of Tuesday, treating 78 coronavirus patients. That’s down from the 82 reported a week ago, and down more than 100 since the peak reported on August 10.

The Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta is recommending that Halloween become a casualty of coronavirus: the CDC says children should not go trick or treating this year. The Georgia Department of Public Health is reporting another 73 deaths from coronavirus over the past 24 hours, bringing the six and a half month total to 6,677.
