Armed gunman shuts down I-575 in Cherokee Co.

A wild standoff in Cherokee County ends with a suspect turning the gun on himself on a major interstate.

Police tell Channel 2's Amanda Cook the man pulled over on the side of Interstate 575 near Sixes Road, around 7:30 a.m. Sunday morning, walked across two lanes of traffic and sat down under an overpass. The man was wearing a bullet-proof vest while holding a gun to his head.

After negotiators tried to talk to him, police say the man wound up shooting and killing himself.

The southbound lanes of I-575 were shut down for more than two hours during and after the incident.  They finally re-opened the highway, as well as the ramps to and from Sixes Road, after 10:00 a.m..

Investigators say the man had a long criminal history and was not from the Atlanta area. They say his car was full of military supplies.

It was the second shooting incident on a major Atlanta highway over the weekend. Friday night, an Alpharetta police officer was shot five times by a suspect after a traffic stop. The suspect was shot and killed, while the officer continues to recover.
