CBS News reports that Amazon workers in the United States, France, Brazil, the UK, Cambodia, and about thirty other countries are protesting today on Black Friday. They’re planning to walk off the job to make points about higher wages and better working conditions.
“On Black Friday, in what has already been named #MakeAmazonPay day, unions, civil society and progressive elected officials will stand shoulder to shoulder in a massive global day of action to denounce Amazon’s despicable multimillion dollar campaigns to kill worker-lead union efforts,” said Christy Hoffman, general secretary of UNI Global Union, a group helping to organize the protests, said. “It’s time for the tech giant to cease their awful, unsafe practices immediately, respect the law and negotiate with the workers who want to make their jobs better.”
Athena, a coalition of local and national groups pushing for workers’ rights, also has planned protests outside a residence owned by Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos in New York City.
Amazon did not respond to CBS News’ request for comment.
