‘The Suspect’ – Richard Jewell and the Olympic bombing aftermath

ATLANTA — It's a moment forever seared into Atlanta's history - the Centennial Olympic Park bombing of 1996.

Tens of thousands of people were inside the park in the early morning hours of July 27th when the backpack bomb exploded. The blast killed one person and injured 111 more. Another death was blamed on the blast - a cameraman who suffered a heart attack.

Richard Jewell was the security guard who spotted the suspicious backpack, alerted authorities, and helped to get many in the park to safety before the explosion. But his life would turn from hero to prime suspect - in only three days' time.

A new movie is out this week that chronicles the ordeal Jewell went through.

A new book does the same, delving into how Jewell's name was leaked as the FBI's prime suspect, the investigation's missteps, along with the media firestorm that followed, before Jewell’s eventual clearance nearly three months later.

WSB's Edgar Treiguts spoke to the authors of "THE SUSPECT - AN OLYMPIC BOMBING, THE FBI, THE MEDIA, AND RICHARD JEWELL, THE MAN CAUGHT IN THE MIDDLE." - Kent Alexander and Kevin Salwen.
