Georgia Bulldogs get off the bus

Georgia Bulldogs will spend less time on a bus this season.

UGA will keep the Bulldogs football team together on campus before home games.  Players will spend the night before a home game at the UGA Hotel and Conference Center at the Georgia Center for Continuing Education instead of Chateau Elan in Braselton or Lake Lanier.

UGA Athletic Director Greg McGarity says it will mean less time shuttling players to and fro.  "There was an effort to save time on the road," McGarity tells the Athens Banner-Herald.

"That's going to be a huge move for us, the less time spent on buses and more time here locally," he adds.

UGA defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt believes so much time on the bus put Georgia at a competitive disadvantage with SEC opponents.

He estimated over a season, Georgia players spend 34 hours sitting on a bus.  "At other places I've been, the same schedule, you spend two hours on a bus," he's quoted in the Athens Banner-Herald.  "That's a whole day and a half sitting on a bus."

The team will also be able to fly out of Athens to get to road games, instead of busing to the Atlanta airport.  A $17 million dollar runway extension at Athens-Ben Epps Airport should be completed by mid-August.  Delta is making two Boeing 717 aircraft available for team use.

The first game of the Bulldogs' 2015 schedule is September 5 against University of Louisiana-Monroe.
