Drizzle and light rain persisted across metro Atlanta during Monday’s morning commute, but with temperatures in the 40s, all of the precipitation was liquid as forecast by Kirk Mellish on WSB Radio.

The National Weather Service posted a winter weather advisory for the far northeast corner of Georgia through 7 p.m. Monday, warning that the rain could mix with a little snow, leading to light accumulations at higher elevations.

After being caught loat-footed by a black ice situation on I-20 earlier this month, the Georgia Department of Transportation early Monday had two-man scout teams checking road conditions in Habersham, Lumpkin, Towns, Union and White counties, according to GDOT spokeswoman Teri Pope.

She said the Georgia Emergency Management Agency and the Georgia State Patrol would also be bringing in extra staff Monday to deal with any winter weather conditions that might develop.

Pope said just after 8 a.m. that snow was falling and beginning to accumulate at the higher elevations along Ga. 348, the Richard Russell Scenic Parkway and U.S. 129 over Blood Mountain.

“A maintenance crew is responding to each location to plow snow and spread material on the roadway to provide additional traction,” Pope said.

While only light snow was predicted for the mountain counties, a major winter storm has residents of the northeastern United States bracing for a blizzard that could dump up to 2 feet of snow in Boston and New York City.

Delta Air Lines, Southwest Airlines and U.S. Airways posted messages on their websites Sunday afternoon warning some flights to cities from Portland, Maine, to Washington, D.C., may be delayed or cancelled due to the storm, which is expected to end Tuesday. Thirty-nine flight into and out of Atlanta are among the nearly 2,000 flights that had been canceled by early Monday.

Delta, Atlanta’s largest carrier, is allowing passengers booked on flights to or from 26 airports in the Northeast Monday and Tuesday to change their flights without penalty.

In addition to the winter weather advisory posted for Georgia’s mountain counties, a wind advisory is in effect from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday for most of the state, including all of metro Atlanta, for winds of 15 to 25 mph with gusts to 35 mph.

Temperatures across metro Atlanta at 6 a.m. ranged from 42 in Alpharetta and Dunwoody and 43 in Marietta and Chamblee to 44 at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport and 45 in Peachtree City.

In the mountains, Blairsville and Blue Ridge reported 39 degrees at 6 a.m.

Mellish says to "bundle up" as Monday will be 15 degrees colder than Sunday, and there is a wind advisory until 8:00 p.m.  Winds will be from the West/NW at 17 MPH gusting, at times, to 28.  Next chance of rain Thursday and then again Sunday.  Temperatures today holding about steady with lows tonight 30-to-33.

Tuesday Mellish says expect a mix of sun and clouds, high 49; lows 27-to-30.

Wednesday will be sunny with highs 52; lows 30-to-33.

There will be a 30 percent chance of a shower Thursday, increasing to 50 percent Thursday night with a high of 57.

Friday will be mostly sunny with a high of 53.  Lows Thursday and Friday 30-to-38.
