New adult toy store prompts Gwinnett to look at local law

A new adult toy store in Gwinnett is prompting the county to seek out revisions to its adult entertainment ordinance.

Tokyo Valentino has been opened a week ago on Pleasant Hill Road. But manager Mike Morrison had to file a lawsuit in federal court to do so.

He maintains his store only carries a small percentage of adult toys while carrying other items such as clothing, lubricants, and pipes.

“Gwinnett County doesn’t define how many adult toys you’re allowed to sell in a store,” he tells WSB’s Sandra Parrish.

The county agreed to allow Tokyo Valentino to remain open while the suit plays out in court.  In the meantime, a moratorium has been put in place on such businesses while Gwinnett studies whether to update its 2001 adult entertainment ordinance.  The plan could be presented to commissioners next week.

Morrison is no stranger to legal battles surrounding his adult stores.  He was the founder the original Inserection stores and is involved in a legal battle with the city of Brookhaven over his Stardust adult store.

“We don’t sell enough in our stock and trade to be an adult store,” he says.  “Back in the day, we sold so much more with the DVD’s and the adult viewing booths; this is just a retail store that just has some adult toys in it.”
