Residents of Stockbridge alerted to phone scam

A scam artist purports to represent the long arm of the law.

The Henry Herald reports, someone's calling citizens as a representative of a payday loan company, claiming there's an outstanding warrant or ticket against them in Stockbridge Municipal Court.  They're urged to provide personal information on a credit application to obtain a short-term loan.

If they balk, a follow-up call is placed, ostensibly from the court, to confirm the charges.  The Stockbridge city manager tells the newspaper, it's all a racket.  The con artist is using a computer program to make it appear, via Caller ID, that the call is originating in the courthouse.

If you have been on the receiving end of this scam operation, contact the Henry County police.
