Following Parkland shooting, metro Atlanta schools see uptick in threats

In the wake of the school shooting in Parkland, Florida, metro Atlanta school systems are seeing an uptick in threats, many of which have turned out to be hoaxes.

On Wednesday, a 15-year-old girl South Cobb High School student made a threat that turned out to be a hoax. Cobb County Police Sgt. Wayne Delk, she is in a whole lot of trouble.

"This is a dangerous thing to be doing,” Delk told WSB, adding, “What we want the public to realize is we're going to investigate and we're not gonna take them lightly.

“But when we find out this is a credible threat, we are still going to take charges on that individual.”

A North Paulding High School student was charged after she made a threat the same day that turned out to be a hoax. Ava Nicole Paige Casteel, 17, has been charged with several offenses including false statements and false public alarm, both felonies.

"I'm not entirely certain that all these students realize how serious it to make these types of threats,” Delk said. “I don't think they understand the amount of resources – the amount of fear – that they put into other students, and to teachers and to parents.”

Delk said officers are responding to these hoaxes when there are real crimes out there that need to be solved. "This has got to stop.

“The violence itself is bad enough; but it's even worse when you have kids making these threats and making light of such things.”
