Sexual assault suspect killed after opening fire on officers in Clayton County, police say

CLAYTON COUNTY, Ga. — Police shot and killed a man they were investigating for sexual assault after the suspect opened fire on them, Clayton County authorities said.

The incident happened on Riverdale Road at the intersection of Crystal Lake.

There was a massive police presence blocking off the road as officers investigated.

The suspect has not been identified.

Police said they were in the process of their investigation when the suspect drove by them. Officers said the man started shooting at them and one of them shot back at him. The man died from his injuries.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is now on the scene.

No officers were hurt. The suspect has not been identified.

An Uber driver at the scene saw the whole thing and said the suspect is a regular at the gas station and was always inside playing the gambling machines.

She was between rides on Thursday morning when she heard several shots. When she looked up, she said she saw a man shooting at police.

“He got out of his car and just started shooting,” she said. “There was no questions asked and then the police got out and they started shooting. He had shot at the windshield like 10 times.”

A witness said that after the suspect collapsed after being shot, officers rushed up and handcuffed him.
