Will FluMist be approved as a treatment to fight the flu?

The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices will meet Wednesday in Atlanta at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Influenza vaccines is on the agenda.

The panel will be discussing the effectiveness of nasal spray vaccines in children. Last year, the panel did not recommend FluMist because it lacked effectiveness. The panel will hold discussions and then vote on whether or not to recommend Flu Mist next year.

“The biggest reason that FluMist or LAIV wasn’t recommended in the past couple of seasons was because it really didn’t show very good protection,” said the CDC’s Kristen Nordlund.

The panel is looking at the FluMist again because of new data from studies and the manufacturer.

“The nasal flu vaccine is a great tool to have in that toolbox of different options people can get for the shots,” Nordlund said.

Delivered as a nasal spray, FluMist Quadrivalent is preferred by some parents and children over injectable influenza vaccines.

This Atlanta mother says she did not get her five year old son vaccinated this year. She says, “It's always hard giving kids shots and not knowing if they're really going to work.”

Once the panel has reviewed the new information on the FluMist, they will have a decision to make.

“The options are to either not recommend it again for next season, to recommend it for next season  or to table the vote and see if they can get in some more data and vote at another meeting later in the summer,” Nordlund said.
