Carjacking suspect arrested after second carjacking

A man wanted for kidnapping an elderly Loganville woman and locking her in the trunk of her car Sunday has been arrested after a second carjacking in Barrow County.

GBI Agent Mike Ayers says 29-year-old Chris Calhoun assaulted a construction foreman who showed up for work this morning at a building under construction near the Gateway Cinemas off Hwy. 316.  That is near the same area where Calhoun wrecked the car belonging to the 81-year-old woman Sunday following a police chase. The woman, who was still inside the trunk at the time, suffered minor injuries.

“We had searched that area twice, so we believe he probably came back in that area early this morning,” says Ayers.
Barrow County Sheriff Judd Smith says the latest victim was assaulted inside a construction trailer.
“He has... very bad injuries at this point, but we do believe he is going to make it,” says Smith.
Once leaving the scene in the second victim’s vehicle, Walton County Sheriff’s deputies received a tip that Calhoun was at a house in Monroe.
When deputies arrived, Sheriff Joe Chapman says he led them on another chase resulting in Calhoun crashing the vehicle off Bold Springs Road.  He says several deputies’ vehicles were damaged during the pursuit as well as a passenger vehicle.
“All I can tell  you is, one bad person is in jail and we put a lot of effort into it,” says Chapman. “He is where he needs to be right now.  And if there’s more that needs to go with him, we’ll put them with him too.”
Calhoun is being held in the Walton County Jail facing numerous charges including kidnapping with bodily injury, aggravated assault, and two counts of carjacking.
Chapman says investigators are still piecing together how the elderly woman became the initial target but believe robbery was the motive. His deputies were notified the woman was missing and a search of her home revealed what they believed was a robbery.  Deputies were able to “ping” the woman’s cell phone and track her whereabouts to the car that Calhoun was driving.
He says several teenagers are being looked at in connection with vehicle thefts in the area but they have not been connected to the carjacking so far.
