Strong to Severe Storms Possible Late Tonight through Sunday Morning

Strong to severe thunderstorms are in the forecast for North Georgia, including Metro Atlanta, for Saturday night into early Sunday morning.

Damaging wind gusts will be the main impact from the storms, though tornadoes are possible as the leading edge of storms move through North Georgia and Metro Atlanta.

In addition, as much as 2-3 inches of rainfall is possible between Saturday night and midday Sunday, potentially producing flash flood conditions in regions that have already been hit hard with heavy rain just 24 hours prior.

Timing the Arrival of the Storms

A few scattered showers and thunderstorms are possible through Saturday afternoon and evening, however the main complex of severe weather will arrive in Northwest Georgia between 7pm and 11pm.

The line of storms will continue to march south-southeast, approaching Metro Atlanta before Midnight.

The line of storms will sag south, moving through the I-85 and I-20 areas through the early morning hours of Sunday, approximately through 3am.

Damaging wind gusts within the line of storms may be strong enough to down trees and powerlines. Spin-up circulation within the line of storms may produce tornadoes as well.

Night-time Storms Require Extra Vigilance

Due to the night-time arrival of the storms, it is essential to have a way of receiving weather notifications that can wake you in the middle of the night. Disable the “Do Not Disturb” feature on cellphones and mobile devices, and keep a weather radio nearby.

Keep cellphones and mobile devices charged -- in the event of a power outage, use the 95.5 WSB App to stay updated on the latest weather information, watches, and warnings.
