The Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Oklahoma has placed portions of Metro Atlanta in a “Slight Risk” of severe weather, or Level 2 out of 5. The Storm Prediction Center defines a Slight Risk as “an area of organized severe storms, which is not widespread in coverage with varying levels of intensity”.
Scattered showers and thunderstorms will move through Metro Atlanta through the morning hours on Thursday. These storms are expected to remain below severe limits.

However, another wave of thunderstorms is possible this afternoon and evening. The timeframe for these storms is 12pm through 9pm. Some of these storms may have enough Convective Available Potential Energy (CAPE) to produce damaging wind gusts as high as 58 mph or greater. Wind gusts of this magnitude are strong enough to knock down trees and powerlines.
During the day, I like to show the visible satellite imagery to analyze features that are available with the sun's light. At night and in the pre-dawn hours of the AM, I use infrared satellite to determine where the stronger storms are developing. (1/) #Atlanta #ATLwx #GAwx pic.twitter.com/VzFuQqozA0

Here is an animation of the Mesoscale Convective Complex over the Appalachian Mountains. The storms associated with this MCC are slowly moving south into North #Georgia. These storms *may* rob some of our atmospheric instability for this afternoon. #Atlanta #ATLwx #GAwx (2/) https://t.co/tOe5GxbTp3

Translation: AM rain & clouds may damper the severe weather threat for this afternoon and evening. It's still rather conditional (if this, then that...), so I will continue to monitor the situation for you throughout the morning and afternoon today!
