General Troughyness: Cloudy skies, rain chances continue through the weekend

Cloudy skies and daily rain showers have settled into Metro Atlanta this week, and the trend will continue through the weekend.

Taking a look at the upper level weather pattern, the jet stream is diving south through the Great Lakes and into the Southeast, and a trough axis is now over the Southeast.

Upper level troughs are responsible for generating unsettled weather at the surface, including cloudy skies and rain showers.

The trough is expected to linger over the Southeast through the weekend and into early next week. As a result, cloud cover will keep afternoon temperatures well below average, within the low to mid 80s.

In addition, off and on rain showers will continue throughout the Metro Atlanta area this weekend.

A warm front will move north on Friday, sparking up more widespread rain showers for the Metro.

On Sunday, a cold front will move south, sparking up more showers and storms before ushering in slightly drier air into the region.
