Changeable weather continues

The FLOOD WATCH continues through Saturday morning as seen above.

The cold wedge that took hold yesterday is still with us today but should begin to erode this afternoon and evening.

A much quieter weather day this Wednesday with less rain and only isolated thunder. The rain coverage and intensity picks up again this evening diminishing tomorrow during the afternoon but increasing again tomorrow night.

The crazy weather yesterday was the result of strong jet stream winds and warm air aloft (warm T advection) riding on top of the cold wedge air near the surface generating elevated instability and frontogenetic forcing (formation of a front-frontogenesis: purple lines and orange shading) and subsequent rapid uplift (omega) of rising air currents as seen in tropicaltidbits 700mb chart and thermodynamic diagram below. Temperatures near surface were in the upper 30s and low 40s while around 8,000 feet they were closer to 50 degrees.

The extreme weather across much of the country thanks to a powerful jet stream flow across the U.S.

Which is a nice tail wind for commercial air liners:

Normal cruising speed for that airplane 600 mph plus push from 200 mph jet stream wind on the rear yields 800 mph ground speed.

Race weekend weather could change for the worse or better as we are under a volatile jet stream pattern and it will depend on whether fronts stall near us or keep moving so stay tuned for updates on the radio, here and on Twitter @MellishMeterWSB.
