Big changes in temperatures this weekend as rain settles into the region

Get set for a big temperature swing heading into the weekend! Just a few days ago, Atlanta registered a high of 87 degrees on Wednesday afternoon, and Thursday finished with highs in the low 80s.

But a cold front pushing through North Georgia Friday will pull in cooler temperatures, and it will spark up scattered showers and thunderstorms throughout the Metro Atlanta area.

Friday Outlook

Afternoon temperatures will climb into the upper 60s to mid 70s in the South Metro region, while the Northwest Metro area will be in the upper 50s to low 60s due to steady rain showers and persistent cloud cover.

For the Atlanta Braves game at Truist Park, first pitch temperatures will be in the low 60s but will drop into the mid 50s by the end of the 9th inning. Rain will be lurking nearby throughout the game.

Cold, Breezy, Rainy for Saturday

Cold air will flow down the Appalachian Mountains Friday evening through Saturday, dropping temperatures into the 40s for much of the day. This pattern is known as “The Wedge”, where cold air is “wedged” into the mountain chain, causing it to flow into Metro Atlanta area.

As a result, daytime temperatures will remain in the 40s, even through the afternoon. The northeast wind will gust as high as 30 mph, producing “feels like” wind chills in the upper 30s to low 40s.

A steady rain will fall Saturday morning through Saturday night, adding up to 1-2 inches of rain for Metro Atlanta. The animation below illustrates the Futurecast radar for Saturday morning through Saturday night.

Drying Out, Sunny and Cool on Sunday

Sunday is turning out to be a very nice day -- the best one this weekend! Morning lows will be in the 40s with the northeast breeze gusting 25 mph, but sunshine will warm temperatures into the upper 50s through the afternoon.
